Between the internet and social media, there has never been more lawncare education and advice easily available to homeowners looking to achieve a lush, thick, healthy lawn.
And generally speaking, this is great.
However sometimes too much information can feel overwhelming, especially when one “best practice” seemingly conflicts with another. And then there’s the question of how you adapt general advice to your own personal lawn situation.
And (speaking from experience), sometimes what can end up happening is:
- Uncertaintity about which grass seed to use throughout different areas of your property
- Confusion about which lawncare protocols are essential vs optional, and when to perform them
- Wasted time and money on unnecessary interventions and products
- Under-buying or over-buying for lawn projects leaving you either running back to the garden centre multiple times mid-project, or with a bunch of leftover material taking up precious storage space in your garage or shed.

About Mark
My name is Mark Macdonald and I’m a 41-year-old married father of two young children. Over the past 10 years I’ve gone from taking an amateur interest in lawncare to becoming a serious lawn and turf enthusiast, spending hours in lawncare forums, reel mowing my low-cut turf 2x per week, and taking on dozens of seeding and sand-levelling projects while testing different methods and products.

Along the way I found out about elite grass seed cultivars that produce a better quality stand of turf across multiple dimensions including colour, growth habit, durability, and disease and drought tolerance. But up until now, for regular homeowners, elite grass seed was hard to find in Canada and only came in very large quantities.
I want to help change that.
So, after consulting with turf experts and golf course superintendents, I started Striped Seed Co., making elite seed accessible to the average lawn enthusiast.
All of this originating from my own love of being outdoors in the lawn and the simple act of mowing.
And I know I’m not alone.
I receive a lot of questions from fellow Canadians who enjoy taking pride in their home but have specific questions about certain products and/or practices. And while I do my best to provide as much help as possible, personalized, in-depth advice is challenging without having a complete picture of someone’s personal lawn situation.
My goal with these consultations are twofold:
- Work with you to help you achieve your lawn goals and help you get your ‘best-ever’ lawn results this year.
- Connect with fellow Canadian lawn enthusiasts and continue to understand the common challenges and questions people have when it comes to their lawn.
