About This Blend

What Makes a Shade Blend Work

Most shade seed fails because it isn't actually built for shade. In Canada, a grass seed blend needs at least 40% fescue to be labelled a shade mixture. This blend contains 60% fine fescue, split between two cultivars selected for their ability to thrive in low light, tolerate drought, and resist the fungal diseases that damp, shaded conditions create.

The remaining 40% balances the blend. Perennial ryegrass germinates in 7 to 10 days, giving you visible results quickly while the fescue establishes at its own pace. A small percentage of Kentucky bluegrass adds the only self-spreading grass in the mix, filling in thin spots over time via underground rhizomes.

The result is a blend that performs in partial to full shade, stays green with less water and fertilizer than a full-sun lawn, and improves rather than thins out season over season.
