Products I Use and Recommend
I get a lot of questions about which lawn care products I prefer and recommend. I've tried many over the years and this page is a centralized list of products I'm using at the moment or online options I believe would be good alternatives. This list will be updated as new products are released and tested over time.
Mowers
Rotary Mowers
The EGO and Milwaukee battery mowers are generally considered the two best battery powered rotary mowers on the market. I own the EGO and it has worked well for me. I've tested the Milwaukee a few times and it's also excellent.
Powered Reel Mower

-
Allett Liberty 43 battery-powered reel mower. This is the mower I use most frequently and is one of the ways I achieve a golf course look with my lawn. I've had this mower for 5 years and I look forward to using it every time. Some things I love about it:
- Cut quality - a reel mower gets you a precision cut you can't get with a rotary mower
- Exchangeable cartridges for mowing, dethatching, scarifying and more
- Compact design, solid battery life, and easy maneuverability. It's easy to store in my garage and bring in and out.
- Integrated drum that lays down effortless stripes. No heavy striping kit that you need to attach and tow behind the mower.
✅ 5% Discount for Striped Seed Co. customers: If you're interested in an Allett mower or accessories, right now James - the man behind Allett.ca - is giving Striped Seed Co. customers 5% off with the discount code STRIPEDSEEDCO. You can check out their mower line-up here.
Lawn Equipment and Gear
- Lawn Levelling Tool. I use this one from R&R Products because it was the only one I could find online a few years ago when I was looking. But I had to pay hefty shipping and duties. It's heavy duty and works well. But since I bought mine, there are now lot of more affordable models available on Amazon.
- ProPlugger 5-In-1 Lawn & Garden Planting Tool. An effective tool for grabbing healthy grass plugs to improve trouble spots.
- Standard dethatching rake
-
Groundskeeper II Dethatching Rake. Amazon | MLR Ropes & Gear | The Arborist Store
- SunJoe Electric Dethatcher. I have this model. I haven't tested the Greenworks model but based on reviews they seem very similar.
- Soil thermometer. This is a meat thermometer that I've had no issue with.
- Gorilla Dump Cart. This cart is indispensable for topdressing and sand levelling projects, as well as other tasks like moving mulch around.
- Walensee 24" Peat moss spreader. I have this model and it works well. There are now some more affordable options available.
- Sprayers Plus YT25E Shoulder-Strap Battery Sprayer. I really like this sprayer for small lawns. It works well and is easy to use.
- Lawn Roller. Amazon seems to have different models that come in and out of stock. Consider checking Facebook Marketplace first to see if someone local is trying to get rid of one.
- Yard Tuff Rebar 18 Inch Steel Ground Stakes. Unfortunately these seem to have gone up in price and were cheaper when I bought them. They work well for protecting seeding projects and offer a more polished look IMO.
- Manual Fork Aerator. I have the Swardman Fork Aerator and think it's great. Landzie also now makes a similar style one.
Spreaders
- Scotts Whirl Hand Held Spreader. This is my preferred hand-held spreader. It always works and you don't need to fuss with batteries.
- Scotts Wizz Hand-Held Battery Spreader. This is a great spreader too but I've had two fail after I've used them multiple times to apply granular fertilizer. So if you go with this model, consider reserving it for lighter material like seed.
- Scotts Edgeguard Mini Broadcast Spreader. A cheap broadcast spreader that feels cheap but generally works. If your lawn feels like it would be too big to do with a hand-held spreader, then this is something you can consider.
- Scotts Elite Spreader with EdgeGuard. A step up in quality. Better build quality and precision.
Irrigation and Watering Gear
- Sprinklers. I've yet to find a manual sprinkler that I love. These Melnor sprinklers have been pretty solid but over the years a couple of the yellow adjustment pieces have broken off.
- Garden Hoses. I have an Underhill heavy duty hose on my hose reel for ad-hoc watering jobs and a couple of light Flexilla hoses that I've bought over the years as well that are good for any manual sprinkler projects that require you to move the hose around.
- Underhill Ng450 Solid Metal Magnum Hose Nozzle. A solid nozzle that I use to spray down my low cut turf on the hottest summer days.
- Underhill SHN-75 RainPro Solid Metal Showerhead Hose Nozzle. Does an excellent job putting out a high volume soft spray.
- Underhill Cv075H High Flow Solid Brass Control Valve. Heavy duty, allows you to control your water at the hose-end.
- Orbit 1/2" Zinc Flow-Thru Spike Base. These are good if you want to use in-ground irrigation heads in an above ground set up.
- Rain Bird RISER2 PVC Spray Head Riser. You need this to attach the spike base above to the sprinkler heads below.
- Rain Bird Simple Adjust Gear Drive Rotor Sprinkler Heads 4-Pack
- Hunter Pro 4" Pop-up Sprinkler Head
- Orbit B-hyve 21005 Bluetooth Hose Faucet Timer. I used these for a few years before I upgraded my DIY in-ground irrigation set-up to a professionally installed one. They work well and there's a companion phone app that lets you set automated watering schedules. They can also be used for seeding projects with manual sprinklers and hoses.
- Underhill Pattern Master Gold Series Nozzle. This is a really well built sprayer nozzle that doesn't leak and is much better quality than the typical cheap plastic ones.
I'll be adding more products to the page over time.
