Why Blend Bluegrass and Ryegrass?
Kentucky bluegrass is the only common cool-season grass that spreads underground. Over time, its root system sends out rhizomes that push up new shoots and knit together into a dense, self-repairing stand of turf. No other species does this. It's also the species behind the deep blue-green colour most people picture when they think of a great lawn.
The trade-off is patience. KBG germinates in 7 to 21 days, and bare ground waiting on bluegrass is bare ground exposed to weed pressure and erosion. That window of vulnerability is the biggest risk in a bluegrass seeding project.
This 80/20 blend is built to close that window. The 20% perennial ryegrass germinates in under a week, gets green coverage on the ground quickly, and suppresses weed competition while the bluegrass establishes underneath. You end up with a lawn that's predominantly bluegrass, with all the self-spreading and colour benefits that come with it, but without the risky establishment period of going 100% KBG.
