Product Seeding Rates and Instructions

This page includes seeding rates and instructions for all our products. Rates are shown as ranges so you can adjust based on your goals. Use the lighter end if you’re just thickening up a decent lawn, or the heavier end if you’re trying to repair thin, patchy areas and want faster results. If you’re starting a new lawn from bare soil, going heavier will help it establish faster and more evenly, while lighter applications can still succeed if you’re willing to be patient.

⚠️ Spreader Setting Cheat Code

Spreader settings aren’t universal — they vary by brand, model, and even the individual spreader. Instead of chasing a perfect number, use this approach:

  • Start low: Set the dial to the lowest setting where seed flows evenly.
  • Make multiple passes: Go in 2–4 directions (north–south, then east–west) until the hopper empties.
  • Bump up only if needed: If coverage looks too light, or it will take far too many passes, raise the setting one notch.

This way you avoid running out too soon and get even, uniform results.

  • SeedLaunch Pro™ Starter Fertilizer + Germination Maximizer 8-15-10

    4 kg bag (8.8 lbs)
    Covers ~2,000 sq. ft.

Application Rate (per 1,000 sq. ft.)
    2 kg (half bag)

    Application Instructions & Spreader Settings
Use half a bag (2 kg) per 1,000 sq. ft. Set your spreader to the lowest opening where granules begin to flow evenly. Walk the area in overlapping directions (north–south, then east–west) until the hopper is empty and coverage looks even.

Note: SeedLaunch Pro™ is a concentrated, germination-focused formula, so it doesn’t map neatly onto the one-size-fits-all spreader settings used for typical maintenance fertilizers. And because every spreader model — and even individual units — can throw product differently, we recommend using the low-flow method above instead of relying on a single dial number. This ensures consistent coverage and the right amount no matter which spreader you own.

Quick Guide

Seeding Intructions

Mow Short & Prep Soil

Mow existing lawn short, ~1.5", (if overseeding), remove clippings, and prepare soil by loosening the top layer with a rake (regular, landscape, or dethatching rake). Add 1/4" topdressing (optional but recommended).

Spread Grass Seed

Spread grass seed at recommend rate. See seeding rates above.

Rake-In Seed

Incorporate seed into existing soil (or topdressing) by very lightly dragging a rake over entire area.

Apply Starter Fertilizer

If you're using Seedlaunch Pro™, apply it after you've raked in your grass seed. If you're applying big-box store starter fertilizer (with all fast-release nitrogen), we recommend applying it after your new grass has germinated so you don't create a surge of top-growth in your existing lawn while you wait for germination.

Roll / Compress Seed Project Area

If you've added new topdressing material like topsoil or compost, we recommend compressing topsoil and seed down flat and firm with a lawn roller (or some other object), or just tamp area down with your feet. This ensures seed-to-soil contact and makes the area more resilient to damage. You want to avoid the seed sitting in fluffy lumps of soil. Don't skip this!

‼️ COVER SEED

To get great germination you need to cover the seed to protect the area from the hot sun and help it retain moisture and stay damp. Peat moss works really well but top soil (or similar) can also be used.

💦 Water

Water and KEEP AREA DAMP AT ALL TIMES. If you let things dry out EVEN ONCE, you run the risk of  sabotaging all your hard work. If you can't be home to water, get a cheap hose timer and leave your sprinkler set up in the lawn. If you can't actively monitor your watering, a general guideline is to water 3-4 times daily for 4-7 minutes per session—usually starting around 10a.m.
