About the Species

Kentucky Bluegrass Characteristics

Kentucky bluegrass is the only common cool-season grass that spreads underground. Its root system sends out rhizomes that grow laterally beneath the surface, and over time these rhizomes push up new shoots that knit together into a dense, self-repairing stand of turf. Thin spots from foot traffic, pets, or seasonal stress gradually fill in rather than staying bare. No other species in the cool-season category does this.

That spreading ability is why KBG is the most widely used grass on golf courses, sod farms, and professional sports fields across North America. It also produces the deep blue-green colour that most people picture when they think of a great lawn.

The trade-off is patience. Kentucky bluegrass germinates in 7 to 21 days, slower than perennial ryegrass or fescue. But once established, a KBG lawn gets thicker and denser over time rather than thinning out.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kentucky Bluegrass

What is the best time to plant Kentucky bluegrass seed in Canada?

Due to its longer germination and establishment time, the best time of year to plant Kentucky Bluegrass is late summer to early fall. Or, depending where you live in the country, as soon as the hottest summer temperatures have passed and there is no threat of a heat wave. Fall offers the longest runway of time for Kentucky Bluegrass to establish before unfavourable temperatures arrive.

How much Kentucky bluegrass seed do I need for my lawn?

Start by measuring your lawn. You can do this by going to your address on Google Maps, right-clicking, then selecting "Measure distance". The seeding rate for Kentucky bluegrass is 1kg-2kg per 1,000 sqft. More information is available on individual product pages.

What temperature does Kentucky bluegrass germinate

Kentucky bluegrass germinates best when soil temperatures are consistently between 10°C-18°C (50°-65°F) and the daytime air temperature is averaging 15°C (60°F) with no threat of overnight frost.

How long does it take for Kentucky bluegrass to germinate?

Historically Kentucky bluegrass has always been slower to germinate than some other common grass varieties— usually between 14 and 30 days. Some modern, elite cultivars germinate in as little as 5-10 days. Under ideal conditions, our elite Kentucky Bluegrass can germinate in as quickly as 5 days.

Does Kentucky bluegrass need a lot of water?

When you first plant Kentucky bluegrass it needs frequent watering. Once established it has moderate watering needs— it needs about 1 inch of water per week.

Where to buy Kentucky bluegrass in Canada?

Big-box stores like Home Depot, Lowes, and Canadian Tire do not offer Kentucky bluegrass seed on its own. All of their grass seed products are blends of perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, and fescue. Some specialty garden centres may carry it but you would typically need to buy it in-person. We offer elite Kentucky Bluegrass seed for sale online in two sizes: 2kg for smaller lawns and repair jobs, and 5kg for larger lawns. Shipping is free and it’s delivered directly to your door. The 2kg size covers up to 1,000sqft and the 5kg size covers 2,500 sqft.

Striped Seed Co. Kentucky Bluegrass Lawn Examples

All of our elite grass seed blends are tested for purity, contain 0.0% weed and crop seed, and are built from high-performance cultivars with top NTEP ratings — the same types of seed trusted by turf professionals across Canada.

  • Elite grass seed benefits

Superior Genetics: Bred for specific traits like disease resistance, drought tolerance, improved color, finer texture, and increased wear tolerance.

Certified, Higher Purity: Tested and certified to ensure it contains a very high percentage of pure seed with minimal weed seeds or other crop seeds, leading to a more uniform lawn.

Improved Germination Rates: Elite seeds have higher germination rates, meaning more seeds will sprout successfully.

Increased Density: Results in a thicker, more lush lawn due to the superior genetics and purity.

Better Performance: Exhibits better performance in terms of overall health, appearance, and resilience.

  • Common (Big-Box) Seed

One-size-fits-all blends: Always contains some mix of ryegrass, bluegrass, and fescue offering less control and potentially leading to a less uniform appearance.

Lower Purity: Typically contains a lower percentage of pure seed and a higher percentage of "filler" and weed seeds or other crop seeds.

Variable Germination Rates: Germination rates can vary due to lower quality of seed.

Lower Density: May result in a thinner lawn compared to elite seed.

More Maintenance: May require more effort to maintain a healthy and attractive lawn due to potential weed issues and varying growth habits.
