Due to its longer germination and establishment time, the best time of year to plant Kentucky Bluegrass is late summer to early fall. Or, depending where you live in the country, as soon as the hottest summer temperatures have passed and there is no threat of a heat wave. Fall offers the longest runway of time for Kentucky Bluegrass to establish before unfavourable temperatures arrive.

Kentucky bluegrass germinates best when soil temperatures are consistently between 10°C-18°C (50°-65°F) and the daytime air temperature is averaging 15°C (60°F) with no threat of overnight frost.

Historically Kentucky bluegrass has always been slower to germinate than some other common grass varieties— usually between 14 and 30 days. Some modern, elite cultivars germinate in as little as 5-10 days. Under ideal conditions, our elite Kentucky Bluegrass can germinate in as quickly as 5 days.

When you first plant Kentucky bluegrass it needs frequent watering. Once established it has moderate watering needs— it needs about 1 inch of water per week.

Big-box stores like Home Depot, Lowes, and Canadian Tire do not offer Kentucky bluegrass seed on its own.
